A powerful lightning strike killed no fewer than 32 cows during a heavy downpour on Saturday in the Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta, located in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The tragic incident, which occurred around noon during a torrential rainfall, was confirmed by the Baale of Osara, Wasiu Afolabi, who spoke with our correspondent on Sunday.

According to Afolabi, Fulani herders responsible for the cattle reported the event to him at about 2 p.m. on Saturday.

“I was at home on Saturday when the Fulani herders at about 2 pm came to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows,” he said.

Upon visiting the scene where the animals were kept before grazing, the Baale said he saw the lifeless cows and promptly informed relevant authorities.

“I got to their place, where they usually keep these cows before they are taken out for grazing and saw these dead cows. We have, however, reported the incident to the Aregbe police division as well as the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr Afolashade Adeyemo, and other people who must be aware,” he added.

He further disclosed that a meeting had been scheduled with the Fulani community to discuss the next steps and ensure the tragedy does not disrupt the peace of the area.

“We have equally scheduled a meeting for this morning with the Fulani to know what to do next and also ensure that the incident does not affect the peace of the community,” Afolabi stated.
