Nigerian singer and songwriter Divine Ikubor, also known as Rema, has opened up on the reason behind a change in his outward appearance and smoking habit.
Rema took to his X handle to celebrate the 1st year anniversary of his sophomore album ‘HEIS’ on Thursday.
He then explained that the physical rebrand was a buildup to the release of the album. He clarified that it did nothing to his personality.
HEIS, the Anniversary. I expressed a lot of surface level reasons why I released this project over a course of interviews when it came out but, here are few “SYMBOLIC” details that wrap around the ENERGY of the project I kept for myself but now, I’d like to share. Consider this an Author’s note.
The cover was inspired by Itachi in Naruto. The Truth masked as illusion, Love buried under what y’all thought was betrayal ( change of sound, smoking , looks, aesthetics & choice of color ),” he wrote.
Rema however noted that the new aesthetic may be a glimpse of who he truly wants to identify as.
“Did I crack a matrix code there?. Is HEIS a phase or is it who I truly am,” he wrote.
The singer was previously known for his signature mask and teddy bear look. He also started off his career by releasing songs about love and heartbreak.
