In a landmark moment for Japan’s defense diplomacy, two F-15J “Eagle” fighter jets from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) landed yesterday at RAF Coningsby, marking the first-ever deployment of these aircraft to Europe.
The fighters arrived as part of Operation Atlantic Eagles, a goodwill mission that will see Japanese aircraft and personnel operate from bases across the United States, Britain, Canada, and Germany. The deployment is supported by KC-767 and KC-46A aerial-refueling tankers, C-2 transport aircraft, and a contingent of roughly 180 JASDF airmen.
London defense officials described the mission as a significant milestone in strengthening security cooperation between Tokyo and NATO allies. The presence of the F-15Js in the eastern English countryside underlines Japan’s growing international defense outreach amid heightened global security challenges.
RAF Coningsby, home to the UK’s Typhoon force, will host joint activities and exchanges between the Royal Air Force and JASDF personnel during the remainder of the visit. According to military sources, the operation aims to build interoperability, deepen mutual understanding, and showcase Japan’s commitment to collective peace and stability.
While Japan has participated regularly in exercises alongside Western allies in Asia and the Pacific, this marks its first direct air power projection into Europe, a symbolic step in expanding defense partnerships beyond its immediate region.
