Trump Administration Imposes Sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro After ‘Illegal Drug Dealer’ Accusation

The Trump Administration has announced sweeping economic sanctions against Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, following President Trump’s public accusation labeling Petro an “illegal drug dealer.”

In a move that signals heightened tensions between Washington and Bogotá, the Trump Administration unveiled new sanctions targeting President Gustavo Petro and several high-ranking officials within his government. The action follows President Trump’s recent statement in which he called Petro an “illegal drug dealer,” raising concerns over Colombia’s alleged ties to international narcotics trafficking.

The sanctions, effective immediately, freeze assets held in the United States by Petro and his inner circle and restrict financial transactions with American institutions. Senior administration officials said the measures are intended to pressure Colombia to address ongoing concerns about drug production and trafficking networks.

Colombia’s foreign ministry quickly condemned the sanctions, calling them “unjustified and politically motivated.” President Petro, responding in a televised address, denied all allegations and accused the Trump Administration of interfering in Colombia’s internal affairs.

These sanctions mark a sharp escalation in the longstanding debate over counter-narcotics cooperation between the two countries. U.S. officials indicated further measures may be considered if Colombia fails to take “meaningful action” against drug cartels operating within its borders.
