Senator Ajibola Basiru announced his withdrawal from the APC’s 2026 Osun governorship contest, citing the demands of his current role as National Secretary and the need to support party unity ahead of the upcoming primary.

At an event in Osogbo, Basiru explained that the “enormous responsibilities” of his position as APC National Secretary, especially in strengthening party structures and preparing for the 2027 general elections, required his full attention, prompting his decision to step down from the gubernatorial race. He clarified that this move followed consultations with APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, and did not signal a retreat from his progressive ambitions.

Basiru encouraged his supporters in the Alubarika Movement to continue supporting the APC and pledged renewed commitment to nurturing emerging political leaders in the state and nationally. He also contributed ₦50 million as a take-off grant for empowerment initiatives. On the political outlook, Basiru expressed confidence in the APC’s strength and its prospects in the 2026 Osun governorship election, stating the party is prepared for a determined contest against the incumbent PDP-led government.

With Basiru’s withdrawal, around 13 aspirants remain in the race for the APC’s ticket, as the party finalizes preparations for the December 13 primary.
