Dr. Olayemi Cardoso officially assumed office on Friday as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), albeit in an acting capacity pending his confirmation by the Senate.
This was made known in a statement by Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, the Director, Corporate Communications at the CBN, who disclosed that Cardoso will head the apex bank in acting capacity pending his confirmation by the Senate, which is currently on its annual recess.
The statement also added that the deputy governor-designates have assumed office following the resignation of the previous deputies.
“Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, recently nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has on Friday, September 22, 2023, formally assumed duty, in an acting capacity, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, pending his confirmation by the Senate. This follows the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the CBN.
“Similarly, the Deputy Governors-Designate have also assumed duty, in acting capacities, sequel to the formal resignation of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora as Deputy Governors of the CBN,” the statement partly reads.
The names of the deputy governors-designate were given as Emem Usoro, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello.
Oaths of office were administered to Dr. Cardoso and his deputies at a brief ceremony held at the bank’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, September 20, 2023.
MUK TV reported last week the appointment of Dr. Cardoso, a former Lagos State Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, as the state’s governor following the president’s approval.
