President Bola Tinubu has taken swift action to protect regional stability, formally writing to the Senate to request approval for deploying Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin.

The request was read during Tuesday plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Citing Section 5(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Tinubu said the move is necessary to assist a sister nation in maintaining peace and security.

The deployment comes at the request of the Republic of Benin and underscores the close ties of friendship and brotherhood between the two countries.

The development follows a dramatic incident on Sunday, when soldiers under the “Military Committee for Refoundation,” led by Lt Col Pascal Tigri, briefly seized Cotonou’s state television station, announcing the overthrow of President Patrice Talon’s government. The coup was swiftly quashed thanks to fighter jets and troops deployed by Nigeria.
