Prominent Mexican businessman Alberto Prieto was shot dead this week in Zapopan, Jalisco, alongside his 16‑year‑old daughter and their bodyguard, in what authorities believe was a targeted cartel attack.

According to local police, attackers unleashed a barrage of gunfire over 200 rounds at Prieto’s Lamborghini Urus while he was driving through one of Zapopan’s upscale neighborhoods. The businessman, his teenage daughter, and their security guard were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say initial evidence suggests the attack may have been retaliation after Prieto reportedly refused to pay cartel protection money, opting instead to rely on his own private security detail. This decision, police believe, may have provoked the violent response.

Zapopan, located on the outskirts of Guadalajara, is known as one of Mexico’s wealthiest areas, home to luxury residences and business elites. Despite its affluence, the city has seen a rise in cartel‑related violence in recent years, underscoring the reach of organized crime networks even into high‑income communities.

Authorities have launched an intensive investigation to identify those responsible, while the killings have reignited national debate over security and the influence of criminal groups in Mexico’s economic hubs.
