Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has formally returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC), sealing his defection in a high-profile ceremony on Monday.
Yusuf was officially received into the ruling party at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House, in what was political homecoming that further reshapes the state’s power dynamics ahead of 2027.
Leading APC figures were on hand to welcome the governor, including former APC National Chairman and ex-Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje; the Deputy President of the Senate and Senator representing Kano South, Barau Jibrin; the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata; alongside other top party leaders.
The governor explained that his decision to rejoin the APC was driven by the need for closer collaboration with the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu, as he seeks to accelerate development and strengthen governance in Kano State.
Yusuf was elected governor in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), but recently resigned from the party amid internal crises.
His exit was followed by a wave of defections involving members of the Kano State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives.
With his return to the APC now official, Yusuf’s move is widely seen as a major boost for the ruling party and a decisive shift in Kano’s political alignment ahead of future electoral battles.
