Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of late Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, has been assassinated at his residence in the western Libyan town of Zintan by unidentified gunmen.
Witness accounts and local reports say armed men stormed his home overnight and shot him during the attack, with authorities and sources close to the family confirming his death. An investigation has been opened to uncover the identities and motives of the assailants, as no group has yet claimed responsibility.
Saif al-Islam, once seen as his father’s likely successor, became a deeply polarizing figure after backing the regime’s crackdown during the 2011 uprising, and in later years made tentative moves to re-enter Libya’s fractured political scene.
