President Bola Tinubu has officially signed the Electoral Act 2026 into law, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its democratic processes and enhance transparency in future elections.

The signing ceremony, held at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, was attended by key members of the National Assembly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) leadership, and top government officials.
President Tinubu described the new electoral law as a crucial reform aimed at promoting credible, free, and fair elections across the country. He commended the lawmakers for their collaboration and emphasized that the updated legislation reflects the collective will of Nigerians to safeguard electoral integrity.

Among the major provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 are the introduction of stricter campaign finance regulations, improved provisions for electronic transmission of results, and enhanced penalties for electoral malpractice.

INEC Chairman welcomed the development, saying the new law provides a stronger legal foundation for the commission to deliver elections that truly reflect the people’s choice. Political observers have also hailed the enactment as a positive step toward deepening Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the next general elections.
