Tragedy has struck the National Assembly as Senator Barinada Mpigi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, is dead at the age of 64.
The Rivers South-East lawmaker reportedly died on Thursday, with a source confirming the sad development to Peoples Gazette.
Born on June 23, 1961, Mpigi was a seasoned politician who carved his name into Nigeria’s legislative history. He first stormed the National Assembly in 2011 as a member of the House of Representatives and returned for a second term in 2016.
In 2019, he won as Senator under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party, representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
During the Ninth Assembly, he was entrusted with leading a powerful joint Senate committee probing crude oil theft in the Niger Delta, a crucial assignment with concerns over massive oil losses.
