There was pandemonium in Kebbi State on Wednesday night as suspected Lakurawa gunmen stormed a mosque in Daɗin Kowa, Maiyama LGA, killing four worshippers and injuring several others during a Qur’anic Tafsir session.

Residents said the attackers surrounded the mosque and unleashed gunfire on the congregation, sending terrified worshippers fleeing for their lives.

A health official told PREMIUM TIMES that the injured were rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment.

The latest attack has plunged the community into mourning, with locals describing it as a “senseless act of violence against innocent people performing their religious rites during Ramadan.”

Calls to the Kebbi State police spokesperson, Bashir Usman, went unanswered at the time of reporting, and the state government has yet to issue an official statement.

This comes just a week after another Lakurawa assault in Arewa LGA claimed 34 lives, including 23 youths, highlighting a worrying surge in terrorist attacks across the region.

Security experts warn that the sect, linked to terror networks in Niger and Mali, has been increasingly targeting mosques, homes, and residential areas, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement.

The threat to the region’s stability was further underscored on 23 February when Major General Bemgha Koughna, GOC of the 8 Division and Commander of Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma, survived a deadly ambush by suspected insurgents, who suffered casualties and lost weapons during the gun battle.

Fear and tension grip Kebbi as the hunt for the assailants continues.
