In a stunning show of unity and commitment, the five South-East governors of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo have each pledged ₦5 billion to turbocharge the ₦140 billion 2026 budget of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC).

The announcement came from Orji Uzor Kalu, who submitted the commission’s 2026 budget report to the Senate Committee on Appropriations, revealing that the bold move aims to rescue stalled projects and supercharge development across the region.

“The commission barely received funding in 2025, leaving critical projects hanging. This fresh injection will restore momentum in health, education, and other strategic sectors,” Kalu said.

Senator Mohammed Monguno, standing in for Appropriations Committee Chairman Solomon Adeola, lauded the initiative and urged governors from other regions to follow the South-East’s bold lead.

With ₦25 billion from the governors alone, SEDC is poised to fast-track transformational projects that could redefine development in the South-East.
