Kano’s political arena has erupted again as the State House of Assembly on Thursday kicked off impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam over alleged misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
In a plenary session, Majority Leader Lawan Dala tabled the impeachment notice, which was read aloud by Speaker Ismail Falgore before stunned lawmakers.
The Assembly is invoking Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, empowering it to remove a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.
A total of 38 lawmakers appended their signatures to the notice, a clear sign that the battle has begun
Speaker Falgore has ordered that Abdulsalam be formally served in line with constitutional procedure.
The move comes against the backdrop of simmering political tension in Kano after Governor Abba Yusuf defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last year.
Abdulsalam refused to follow the governor to the APC, choosing instead to remain with the NNPP, a decision insiders say has polarised the state government.
With impeachment proceedings now underway, Kano stands on edge again as power tussle threatens to shake the state’s political structure to its core.
