Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially resigned from the party, citing the need for political realignment amid shifting dynamics in the country’s political space.
Kwankwaso announced his exit in a statement on Sunday, confirming his immediate departure from the party he once led to national prominence.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.”
He described the decision as a difficult but necessary one, given his long-standing ties with the party and the evolving nature of Nigeria’s political environment.
“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.
The former governor expressed gratitude to the NNPP leadership, including the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and other party organs for their support over the years.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time. I also thank the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party — from the ward to the state level,” he stated.
He also appreciated members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and loyal supporters, urging continued cooperation toward national development.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
Though Kwankwaso did not officially name his next political platform, indications point to a possible move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is expected to make a formal declaration in Kano.
Sources within both the NNPP and ADC suggest that preparations are underway to receive the former governor, with top party figures expected at the event.
A senior ADC official, who spoke anonymously, revealed that the party’s National Chairman and Secretary, David Mark and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, are expected to welcome him into the party fold.
Reports also indicate that Kwankwaso may be accompanied by the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, in the anticipated move.
Meanwhile, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and a key figure in the ADC, Atiku Abubakar, recently hosted Kwankwaso in Abuja for what he described as a courtesy visit.
Atiku, via his official X handle, said both men held a robust discussion on the state of the nation during the meeting.
