Lagos airport posted the fastest air traffic growth in Africa in 2025, recording an 11.8 percent increase in passenger numbers, according to new industry rankings presented at an aviation conference. The performance has strengthened Nigeria’s position as a key hub on the continent and underscored growing demand for both domestic and international travel.
The rankings showed that two Nigerian airports Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja are now listed among Africa’s Top 10 airports by traffic and connectivity. This marks a significant milestone for the country’s aviation sector, reflecting recent investments, improved connectivity, and rising passenger confidence.
Citing data from the Official Airline Guide, the presentation also revealed that Nigeria has emerged as Africa’s second-largest domestic passenger market, handling over 10.5 million domestic passengers in 2025 with a 10 percent year-on-year growth rate. Industry stakeholders say the figures highlight Nigeria’s expanding middle class and increased use of air travel for business and leisure, while calling for sustained upgrades in infrastructure, safety, and service quality to maintain the momentum.
