Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has appealed to President Ahmed Tinubu, asking for the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as a Christmas gesture.
In a statement made available to journalists by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze argued that Kanu’s release would facilitate the Chief of Defense Staff’s efforts in addressing Southeastern insecurity challenges.
The statement summarily reads, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo believes that President Bola Tinubu, as a respected political figure, could gift the Southeast with the release of Nnamdi Kanu ahead of the December and January festivities. This act of clemency would not only assist General Christopher Musa in his duties but also diminish the influence of Simon Ekpa and eradicate the manufactured security issues stemming from those exploiting Nnamdi Kanu’s situation.”
The apex Igbo socio-cultural group further urged President Tinubu to empathize with the Southeast’s plight and allow for Kanu’s release, fostering a serene environment for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Ohanaeze stated that restoring peace in the Southeast through Kanu’s release would render the services of the Defense Staff and Security Chiefs in maintaining peace unnecessary.
Expressing dismay, the group highlighted the absence of investigation or public addresses from the Defense Staff and Security Chiefs regarding the tragic discovery of over 70 individuals murdered by herdsmen linked to the Lokpanta Cattle Market in Leru Umunneochi, Abia State.
While addressing the root cause of insecurity in the Southeast, the statement decried the activities of Fulani herdsmen and criminals exploiting the Biafra movement for their actions.
Ohanaeze pointed out substantial economic losses in the region since Kanu’s imprisonment and the incursions of Fulani herdsmen during the Buhari administration.
Isiguzoro encouraged collective support for peace and justice in the Southeast, emphasizing that Kanu’s release would offer solace to the populace and rekindle trust in leadership’s commitment to Igbo welfare and security.
