The Enugu State Government has signed grant agreements with renewable energy developers to deliver reliable electricity to four underserved rural communities across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The agreement, signed during the Renewable Energy Development for State Electricity Market (REDSEM) ceremony in Enugu, will benefit the communities of Okpatu, Ugbawka, Agonta and Ijabe through the deployment of solar mini-grid projects.

The initiative is supported by the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), the German Development Agency (GIZ), the European Union, and the German Government.

Chairman of the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), Chijioke Okonkwo, said the project would provide 24-hour electricity to thousands of residents for the first time, boosting economic activities, healthcare, education and security.

According to him, about 8,000 residents are expected to benefit from the solar-powered systems, while the selected developers will contribute to the implementation and long-term sustainability of the projects.

Representing Governor Peter Mbah, the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, described access to reliable electricity as critical to rural development and economic growth, assuring investors of the government’s support.

Officials said the projects could be completed within six to twelve months, with each community receiving a solar mini-grid with a minimum generation capacity of 200 kilowatts.

The state government noted that the four communities are among 113 underserved and unserved communities identified for electrification under its broader energy expansion programme.
