The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has launched the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) in Imo State as part of efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children and improve access to quality education.
Speaking at the launch in Owerri, UNICEF’s Chief of Enugu Field Office, Juliet Chiluwe, said the digital learning platform was introduced in response to the educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and has already enrolled more than 2.3 million learners across Nigeria since its rollout in 2022.
According to her, the Nigeria Learning Passport is a collaborative initiative involving the Federal Ministry of Education, UNICEF, Airtel, IHS Towers, TECNO, and Microsoft, with support from the Global Partnership for Education.
Chiluwe noted that the launch in Imo brings the platform’s coverage to 25 states nationwide. She explained that the platform offers both online and offline learning opportunities and is accessible to Airtel users without data charges.
She reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to ensuring that all learning content aligns with the Nigerian curriculum and commended the Imo State Government for its dedication to improving education.
Also speaking, the Nigeria Learning Passport Team Lead, Philip Mamman, described the platform as user-friendly and encouraged teachers and students to embrace the initiative to enhance learning outcomes.
UNICEF said the platform is expected to expand educational opportunities for children, particularly those whose access to schooling has been disrupted.
