Two kidnapped residents of Ohuhu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State have been rescued through a joint operation involving police operatives, vigilantes, forest guards and community youths.

The victims, Mrs. Onyinyechi Ekechukwu and 20-year-old Izuchukwu Okechi, were abducted on June 10 near Nkpu-Ala along the Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road while returning from their farm.

According to the Abia State Police Command, six suspected kidnappers carried out the abduction and later demanded a ransom from the victims’ families.

Following the incident, security operatives and local youths launched a coordinated search operation in nearby forests and bushes. On sighting the advancing rescue team, the kidnappers reportedly fled, abandoning their captives.

Police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed that both victims were rescued successfully, although one sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The command said efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
