The Anambra State Government has demolished a three-storey building that collapsed during construction in Umuoji, Idemili North Local Government Area, citing serious violations of building regulations and public safety concerns.

The structure, located in Umuoma Village, was pulled down after technical assessments by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development declared it unsafe and a threat to nearby residents and properties.

According to the government, preliminary investigations linked the collapse to the use of substandard materials, poor construction practices, and failure to comply with approved building standards. Authorities also identified the absence of building permits and other regulatory breaches.

Speaking during an inspection of the site, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, , said the demolition was necessary to prevent future disasters and protect lives.

He warned developers and contractors against flouting planning laws, revealing that the state government is reviewing existing regulations to introduce stiffer penalties, including possible criminal sanctions, for offenders.

The government also urged property developers to engage qualified professionals and adhere strictly to approved building standards as part of efforts to promote safe and orderly urban development across the state.
