The management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has announced plans to commence the renovation of students’ hostels immediately after the ongoing examinations as part of efforts to improve students’ welfare and learning conditions.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ursula Akanwa, disclosed this while receiving the newly elected Students’ Union Government (SUG) executives during a courtesy visit to her office.

She said the hostel renovation project would begin during the vacation period and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to creating a more conducive environment for students.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted improvements in the institution’s academic system, noting that examination results are now released within weeks after examinations, reducing delays and ensuring smoother academic activities.

Addressing the new student leaders, Prof. Akanwa urged them to embrace accountability, discipline, and responsible leadership, stressing that leadership is an opportunity to serve and not a platform for personal interests.

Meanwhile, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Raphael Iheke, described the recent SUG election as one of the most successful in the university’s history, revealing that over 6,000 students participated in the exercise, a significant increase from previous elections.

Speaking on behalf of the new executives, SUG President, Comrade Omeonu Uchechukwu Goodnews, pledged to work closely with the university management to promote peace, progress, and students’ welfare on campus.
