Ghana is hosting a major international conference on slavery reparations in its capital, Accra, bringing together African leaders, Caribbean representatives and ministers from around 80 countries to advance calls for justice and compensation for the historical impacts of slavery and colonialism.

The high-profile gathering has attracted the participation of the presidents of Senegal, Namibia, Liberia and São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as the Prime Minister of Barbados. Ministers and senior government officials from approximately 80 countries are also attending the event.

The conference is focused on strengthening international support for reparations for the transatlantic slave trade and colonial-era injustices, with participants discussing pathways for compensation, historical accountability and economic development initiatives for affected communities.

In a significant development, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for the growing call for reparations, adding momentum to a movement that has gained increasing attention across Africa and the Caribbean in recent years.

Organisers say the conference aims to build a unified position among participating nations and develop concrete proposals to advance the reparations agenda on the global stage. Discussions are expected to continue over several days, with delegates seeking greater international recognition of the lasting social and economic consequences of slavery and colonial exploitation.
