Tension erupted at Divine Mercy Hospital in Awada, Anambra State, after a woman allegedly posing as a nurse was apprehended over a suspected attempt to abduct a newborn baby from the hospital’s maternity ward.
According to eyewitnesses and a viral video circulating on social media, hospital staff became suspicious of the woman after noticing her movements around the maternity section and questioning her identity and role within the facility.
The suspect reportedly failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding her department, supervisor, or reasons for handling a baby that was not hers, prompting staff and relatives of patients to raise an alarm.
The situation quickly attracted attention within the hospital premises, leading to her detention before security operatives were contacted.
Witnesses alleged that the woman was not a recognised member of the hospital workforce and had gained access to sensitive areas while dressed in a nurse’s uniform.
Police were subsequently invited to the scene and took the suspect into custody for further investigation. Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
The development has sparked concerns among residents over the safety of newborns in healthcare facilities and renewed calls for stricter security measures, including enhanced identity verification for medical personnel and improved surveillance systems in maternity wards.
The incident has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many calling for a thorough investigation to determine the suspect’s identity, motive and whether she acted alone or as part of a wider criminal network.
Hospital management has yet to issue an official response as investigations continue.
