Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has launched its 2026 Tree-Planting Campaign as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability, climate action and cooperative-driven development.

The initiative, organised by the Centre for Agripreneur and Cooperative Research/Practice (CACORP) to mark the International Cooperative Day, brought together university management, government officials, cooperative societies, agribusiness stakeholders and students under the theme, “Planting Trees for Posterity, Climate Action and Prosperity.”

Speaking at the event, CACORP Director, Dr. Nma Okechukwu Okoroji, described tree planting as a vital step towards combating climate change, preserving biodiversity and securing a sustainable future.

“We are not just planting trees; we are planting hope, knowledge and opportunities for future generations,” she said, while urging stakeholders to embrace environmental responsibility and climate-smart practices.

Dr. Okoroji highlighted the centre’s achievements in agribusiness development, cooperative management and youth empowerment, noting that more than 2,500 students, youths and farmers have benefited from its training programmes.

A major highlight of the event was the presentation of an Award of Excellence in Agripreneurship and Youth Empowerment to the Chief Executive Officer of TEVA Foods, Mr. Chima Christian, in recognition of his contributions to agricultural development and support for youth-focused initiatives.

The award recipient also donated improved tree seedlings to support the university’s sustainability agenda and pledged continued collaboration in promoting climate-smart agriculture and agripreneurship.

Participants later proceeded to the university’s demonstration farm, where they planted tree seedlings to officially inaugurate the 2026 campaign.

The initiative is expected to strengthen UNIZIK’s environmental sustainability drive, encourage climate awareness and promote agripreneurship as a pathway to food security, economic growth and community development.
