Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Nyesom Wike, has called on party members to brace for a fierce political contest ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that political power is never freely handed over but must be earned through dedication, sacrifice and perseverance.
Speaking at the PDP’s 109th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the former Rivers State governor urged party faithful to abandon any sense of entitlement, stressing that the opposition can only reclaim power through hard work, strategic mobilisation and commitment.
Drawing from his years in politics, Wike encouraged aspirants and party leaders not to be intimidated by challenges such as arrests, court cases or political pressure.
According to him, many successful political journeys are built on overcoming adversity and remaining focused despite obstacles.
He expressed confidence that ongoing legal disputes involving the party would not hinder its preparations for the next election cycle, assuring members that the PDP remains committed to strengthening its position ahead of 2027.
Wike also criticised those who had become too comfortable with the privileges of being in government, urging them to adjust to the demands of opposition politics and play active roles in rebuilding the party.
The FCT minister challenged PDP leaders and aspirants to concentrate on winning elections, expanding grassroots support and delivering tangible results rather than offering excuses.
He described political struggle as a true test of courage, resilience and endurance.
Earlier, PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed appealed for unity within the party and commended officials for the successful conduct of recent primaries.
He also praised Wike for his continued support and leadership.
In the same vein, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, called for reconciliation among party members.
He urged aggrieved stakeholders to move beyond disputes arising from the primaries and unite behind a common objective.
According to Ohuabunwa, the PDP’s chances of success in future elections depend on greater internal cohesion, stronger grassroots mobilisation and sustained efforts to expand the party’s support base across the country.
