The Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, faced public criticism during the Third Session of the 19th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Enugu after members of the congregation rejected his claims on the state’s water supply.

While addressing worshippers at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Ogbete, Onyia said the Peter Mbah administration had expanded water infrastructure, claiming that pipe-borne water now reaches many parts of Enugu.

His remarks were met with loud chants of “No! No! It’s a lie!” from members of the congregation, who disputed the claim. Despite urging the audience to verify the government’s efforts, the interruptions continued, forcing him to cut his speech short.

The incident follows ongoing complaints by many residents over limited access to pipe-borne water, with several communities still relying on boreholes and commercial water vendors despite government efforts to improve water supply.

The Enugu State Government has yet to officially respond to the incident.
