The Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Women Information Network (WINET) to strengthen efforts aimed at preventing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and promoting the rights of women and girls across the state.

The pledge was made by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Ijeoma Aghukwa, during an advocacy visit by WINET under its project, “Strengthening Women Rights Organizations for Gender-Based Violence Prevention.”

Dr. Aghukwa commended the organisation’s advocacy efforts and assured that the ministry would continue to collaborate with groups whose programmes align with the state’s agenda of empowering and protecting women. She also highlighted various women empowerment initiatives being implemented by the Abia State Government in partnership with development agencies, including the World Bank and the Ahia Oma Market Women Initiative.

Earlier, WINET said its project, supported by the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement (AIPLA), is designed to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in preventing and responding to Gender-Based Violence. The organisation stressed that ending GBV requires collective action by government, civil society, traditional institutions and other key stakeholders.
