The Liberal Democrats have tabled an Early Day Motion in the UK Parliament calling for England captain Harry Kane to be awarded a knighthood, citing his outstanding contributions to English football and his record-breaking performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The motion, introduced by Layla Moran, praises Kane for the pride he has brought to the country during England’s World Cup campaign and highlights his latest milestone of surpassing football legend Pelé in total World Cup goals scored.

Moran is urging Members of Parliament from across all political parties to support the proposal, arguing that Kane’s achievements on the international stage deserve formal national recognition. The motion also applauds England’s performances at the tournament and wishes the team continued success as they pursue World Cup glory.

While Early Day Motions rarely lead directly to legislative action, they are commonly used by MPs to draw attention to issues and rally parliamentary support. Moran said it was time for both the Government and British royal family to “get the sword ready” for “Sir Harry”, reflecting growing calls for the England skipper to receive one of the country’s highest honours.
