Renowned Nigerian historian and author, Nwando Achebe, has been promoted to the rank of University Distinguished Professor of History at Michigan State University, the institution’s highest academic honour.
The daughter of celebrated novelist Chinua Achebe, Professor Nwando Achebe was recognised for her outstanding contributions to African history, research, teaching and scholarship. She also serves as the Jack and Margaret Sweet Endowed Professor of History and Associate Dean in the university’s College of Social Science.
A leading scholar of African history, Achebe is widely known for her work on indigenous knowledge systems, women’s history and oral traditions. She is the author of several award-winning books and the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of West African History.
Beyond academia, she currently serves as President of the African Studies Association and co-leads the Christie and Chinua Achebe Foundation, where she works to preserve and promote the literary legacy of her father for future generations.
