Residents of a four-storey residential building at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, Abia State, have been in a panic mood after the structure developed massive cracks, forcing an emergency evacuation over fears that it could collapse at any moment.

The occupants were reportedly ordered on Wednesday night to vacate the building immediately after alarming signs of structural failure became evident. Residents rushed to salvage their belongings as fears of a possible disaster gripped the area.

Eyewitnesses said the building had developed cracks and was visibly tilting to one side, raising concerns about its structural integrity. Some residents also alleged that the building was constructed without a solid foundation, which they believe may have contributed to its worsening condition.

The Abia State Government swiftly responded by deploying officials from the Ministry of Works and the Town Planning Authority to inspect the building and assess the level of risk.

As part of emergency safety measures, personnel of Aba Power disconnected all electricity meters serving the building, cutting off power supply to eliminate the risk of electrical hazards.

Residents and sympathisers expressed gratitude that the warning signs were detected before tragedy struck, noting that the timely evacuation may have saved dozens of lives.

Amid scenes of anxiety and uncertainty, occupants were seen hurriedly moving furniture and other personal belongings out of the building as they faced an uncertain future.

Authorities are expected to conduct comprehensive structural assessments before deciding whether the building can be repaired or should be demolished.
