The House of Representatives has withdrawn its proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police, choosing instead to consider a similar Executive-sponsored bill transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The decision was announced during Tuesday’s plenary, where lawmakers gave the Executive-backed state police bill both its first and second readings.

Following the readings, the proposed legislation was referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for detailed legislative scrutiny.

The move effectively puts the House’s earlier state police proposal on hold as lawmakers shift their attention to the Executive-backed amendment.

At the committee stage, members are expected to thoroughly examine the bill’s key provisions before it is returned to the floor of the House for further debate and consideration.

The Executive proposal is widely expected to shape ongoing constitutional efforts aimed at addressing Nigeria’s security challenges through the possible creation of state police.
