To launch Clean Akwa Ibom Brigade, sanitation courts, demolish buildings on drainage channels

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced a new flood control strategy following the recent flash floods in Uyo and surrounding communities.

The plan includes the development of a new state flood and drainage master plan, the creation of a Clean Akwa Ibom Brigade to keep drainage channels clear, the establishment of environmental sanitation courts, stricter enforcement of the monthly sanitation exercise, and the demolition of buildings obstructing natural waterways.

Governor Eno said the existing flood master plan is outdated and no longer reflects the state’s rapid urban growth, directing experts to produce a modern blueprint to guide future drainage and flood management.

He also warned that any structure built on drainage paths would be removed, regardless of ownership or approval status.

The governor added that sanitation courts would prosecute environmental offenders, with community service replacing fines in some cases, while movement restrictions during the monthly sanitation exercise would be strictly enforced.

Eno stressed that tackling flooding requires both government action and public cooperation, urging residents to keep drains clear and comply with environmental regulations.
