The Enugu State Government has announced that its 300-bed specialist hospital, currently under construction, will commence operations before December as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery and reduce medical tourism.
Commissioner for Health, Professor George Ugwu, disclosed that the state-of-the-art facility will provide advanced diagnostic and treatment services, many of which are currently unavailable in the South-East region.
According to him, the hospital will feature a cardiac catheterisation laboratory (cath lab), enabling specialists to diagnose and treat complex heart conditions using modern medical technology.
Professor Ugwu also revealed that the hospital’s dialysis unit will be equipped with more than 10 dialysis machines, while a central oxygen supply system and other advanced medical infrastructure will enhance patient care and service delivery.
He explained that the facility is designed to serve as the apex referral hospital in the state, receiving patients from primary healthcare centres, cottage hospitals, general hospitals, teaching hospitals and other federal health institutions across Enugu State.
The commissioner further disclosed that the state government is engaging Nigerian medical specialists in the diaspora to strengthen the hospital’s workforce and provide world-class healthcare services.
Professor Ugwu described the project as a key component of Governor Peter Mbah’s healthcare reforms, expressing confidence that the facility will significantly improve access to specialised medical care and reduce the need for Nigerians to seek treatment abroad.
