The Caretaker Committee of Ogbo-Ogwu Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, has commenced a five-day free medical outreach for traders as part of efforts to improve access to healthcare and encourage regular medical check-ups.
Speaking at the opening of the programme held at the market clinic, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Mr. Ndubuisi Chukwuleta, said the initiative was designed to provide healthcare services for traders who often neglect their health because of the demands of their businesses.
He noted that the outreach, which is the second since he assumed office, would enable traders to undergo medical examinations for the early detection and management of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, thereby reducing the risk of preventable health complications.
Mr. Chukwuleta commended Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, for establishing a functional clinic within the market and deploying qualified healthcare personnel to provide medical services.
He also acknowledged the support of the Commissioner for Health and the hospital management in making the medical outreach successful.
The chairman urged traders to take advantage of the free medical services and make their health a priority despite their busy schedules.
Also speaking, the Treasurer of the Caretaker Committee, Mr. Kenneth Oliseke, described the outreach as timely, noting that it would help reduce cases of undiagnosed health conditions among traders.
He advised traders against self-medication and encouraged them to seek proper diagnosis and treatment from qualified healthcare professionals.
The five-day outreach features blood pressure checks, blood sugar and cholesterol screening, malaria testing, eye examinations, and general health education aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles among traders.
