The Anambra State Government has inaugurated an eight-member Review Committee to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the Anambra State Transport Company (TRACAS) as part of efforts to reposition the state-owned transport service for greater efficiency, accountability and long-term sustainability.
Inaugurating the committee in Awka, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Obiefuna Ibuzo, said the exercise is aimed at evaluating the operational performance of TRACAS and recommending practical reforms to improve service delivery and meet the growing transportation needs of residents.
Hon. Ibuzo explained that the review became necessary because the company’s revenue generation and overall performance have not kept pace with the state’s economic growth and the increasing demand for quality transport services under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
He tasked the committee, chaired by Chief Michael Chukwudeme, with reviewing the company’s operational, financial and administrative activities, assessing its revenue performance and recommending measures to strengthen efficiency, transparency and institutional accountability.
According to the Commissioner, the committee will examine TRACAS’ legal framework, corporate governance structure, staffing, financial records, vehicle fleet, passenger transport services, courier operations, commercial activities and operational outlets across the state.
The committee is also expected to inspect transport parks and facilities, engage with management and staff, verify relevant documents and identify operational challenges affecting the organisation.
Based on its findings, the committee will recommend reforms, including possible restructuring, Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements, franchising models and other sustainable strategies aimed at making TRACAS more competitive and financially viable.
Hon. Ibuzo directed the committee to submit weekly progress reports to keep Governor Soludo informed of its activities and gave members three weeks to conclude the assignment, with the possibility of an extension if necessary.
He assured the committee of the Ministry’s full support and urged the management of TRACAS to cooperate fully throughout the review process.
The Commissioner expressed confidence that the exercise would lay the foundation for a modern, efficient and customer-focused transport system capable of meeting the needs of Ndi Anambra.
