Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has marked his 65th birthday with a call for selfless service, urging Nigerians to embrace compassion and invest in the welfare of others rather than indulge in lavish celebrations.
In a statement commemorating his birthday, Obi described birthdays as opportunities for reflection, thanksgiving and renewed commitment to serving humanity, especially in view of Nigeria’s prevailing socio-economic challenges.
He said the country’s rising poverty, unemployment, inadequate healthcare and limited opportunities make extravagant personal celebrations inappropriate when many citizens continue to struggle.
As part of the commemoration, Obi attended a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha before visiting St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, where he donated ₦10 million to support healthcare services.
He said the visit reinforced his belief that leadership is fundamentally about caring for people, particularly the vulnerable, stressing that access to quality healthcare and education remains essential for national development.
The former governor also announced plans to spend the remainder of the month visiting schools and hospitals, where he intends to make financial contributions as part of his birthday activities.
Reflecting on his years in business and public service, Obi noted that he has consistently encouraged friends and supporters to channel resources meant for birthday gifts and celebrations into projects that benefit society, including the construction of schools and educational facilities.
He reaffirmed that the true measure of a person’s life lies not in wealth or public recognition but in the positive impact made on the lives of others, while expressing hope for a more united, compassionate and prosperous Nigeria.
