Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the dismissal of the driver and conductor of Bus 8 in the Abia Green Shuttle fleet over allegations of fare diversion and misconduct.
The action follows the circulation of a viral video in which the two officials were allegedly seen collecting cash fares directly from passengers instead of using the state’s approved electronic card payment system. The cash collected was reportedly diverted for personal use.
Governor Otti announced their disengagement during the July edition of “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” the state’s monthly media briefing held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia.
Responding to questions on overcrowding in the state’s mass transit buses, the governor disclosed that the government has installed electronic surveillance cameras across the Abia Green Shuttle fleet to monitor the activities of drivers, conductors and passengers.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and improved service delivery within the state’s public transportation system.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct in public service, stressing that anyone found violating established procedures would face appropriate sanctions.
He assured commuters that the electronic monitoring system would strengthen oversight, prevent revenue leakages and improve operational efficiency as the state continues to expand its mass transit programme.
