The Anambra State Government has banned the laying of asphalt during the rainy season as part of new quality control measures aimed at improving the durability of roads and safeguarding public investment.
The directive, issued through the Ministry of Works, follows concerns over the impact of heavy rainfall on newly paved roads and forms part of efforts by the state government to enforce higher engineering standards on road construction projects.
Speaking during a meeting with contractors handling government road projects, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Okey Ezeobi, directed contractors to suspend asphalt paving whenever weather conditions are unfavourable.
He warned that roads constructed below approved engineering specifications would not be accepted by the government, stressing that contractors would be held accountable for defects resulting from poor workmanship or failure to comply with project standards.
According to the commissioner, the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo remains committed to delivering durable and high-quality road infrastructure through strict supervision, regular quality assurance inspections and full compliance with engineering specifications.
Mr. Ezeobi said the new measures are designed to ensure value for public funds, reduce the incidence of road failures and improve the lifespan of road projects across the state.
He further warned that contractors who violate the new directive or compromise on quality risk sanctions, including the termination of their contracts.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe, durable and sustainable road infrastructure for the benefit of residents and motorists across Anambra State.
