The Enugu State Government has intensified efforts to eliminate quackery in the health sector, with renewed focus on sanitising medical laboratory practice and improving the quality of healthcare services across the state.
The Commissioner for Health, George Ugwu, disclosed this while receiving the National President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Casimir Ifeanyi, and members of the association in Enugu.
Ugwu condemned the increasing rate of unprofessional practices, particularly facilities that combine laboratory services with pharmacies, treatment centres and other unauthorised commercial activities, describing such operations as a threat to patient safety and the integrity of healthcare delivery.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to eradicating quackery through stricter regulation, continuous monitoring, enforcement of professional standards and compliance with established healthcare guidelines.
The commissioner also commended the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria for its role in promoting professionalism, advocacy and capacity building within the medical laboratory profession.
He assured the association of the government’s willingness to strengthen collaboration with professional bodies whose activities align with the administration’s vision of providing accessible, quality and people-centred healthcare services.
Ugwu highlighted ongoing investments by the administration of Governor Peter Mbah in healthcare infrastructure, workforce development and the revitalisation of primary healthcare centres across the state.
Earlier, AMLSN National President, Casimir Ifeanyi, informed the commissioner of the association’s forthcoming Annual Public Health Lecture in Enugu and sought the support and participation of the state government.
He noted that the event is aimed at promoting quality healthcare delivery, advancing public health awareness and strengthening collaboration between healthcare professionals and government institutions to improve health outcomes.
