The Anambra State chapter of the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria has called for the immediate release of the wife and other family members of Ebonyi-born media practitioner and activist, Chika Nwoba, over their alleged arrest and detention.

In a statement, the association expressed concern over reports alleging that security operatives stormed Nwoba’s family residence in Awka, Anambra State, assaulted members of his household and took his wife to an undisclosed location while demanding that he surrender himself.

OMPAN stated that if the allegations are true, they raise serious concerns about respect for constitutional rights, due process and the protection of innocent family members.

The association reaffirmed that citizens have the constitutional right to express their opinions, peacefully criticise government policies and advocate for good governance without fear of intimidation or retaliation.

While acknowledging the responsibility of security agencies to investigate alleged offences, OMPAN maintained that such investigations must be conducted strictly within the provisions of the law, stressing that family members should not be subjected to intimidation, violence or detention as a means of compelling the appearance of a suspect.

The association called on the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to ensure a transparent investigation into the allegations and to facilitate the release of any member of Nwoba’s family being held without lawful justification.

OMPAN also urged relevant security agencies to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and uphold the constitutional rights of all citizens.

The association further appealed to all stakeholders to remain calm, avoid actions capable of escalating tensions and allow lawful processes to take their course.

As of the time of filing this report, the allegations had not been independently verified, and neither the Ebonyi State Government nor the relevant security agencies had issued an official response. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
