The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of three children at a prayer house in Ideani, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, while a fourth child is receiving treatment in hospital.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Monday, has thrown the community into mourning, with the operator of the prayer house, who reportedly presented herself as a Christian minister, now in police custody.
According to the President General of Ideani Community and Secretary of Idemili North Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. Paul Okoye, community leaders raised the alarm after receiving information that four children had spent the night at the woman’s residence under unclear circumstances.
He said the matter was immediately reported to the Divisional Police Officer in Ogidi and the Mayor of Idemili North, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, who mobilised security personnel to the scene.
On arrival, security operatives reportedly discovered three of the children dead, while the fourth child was rescued in critical condition and rushed to a hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
Community leaders disclosed that the suspect operated a Christian prayer ministry and also ran piggery and poultry businesses within the same premises. They further alleged that some suspicious objects were recovered during a search of the property. However, the police have not officially confirmed the nature or relevance of the items, insisting that investigations are ongoing.
The incident triggered tension in the community as some youths attempted to attack the premises, but were restrained by community leaders and security personnel, who appealed for calm and urged residents to allow the law to take its course.
The Police Command said no formal charges have been filed against the suspect, noting that investigations, including forensic examinations, witness interviews and the testimony of the surviving child, are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragic development has renewed concerns over child safety and the activities of unregulated prayer centres, with residents calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims.
