The Enugu State Government has challenged stakeholders in the health sector to translate government policies, investments and strategic plans into measurable improvements in the health and wellbeing of residents.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. George Ugwu, gave the charge on Saturday in Enugu while declaring open the 2026 Health Sector Joint Annual Review Meeting.
Ugwu said the state government remained committed to building a stronger, more responsive and resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of residents.
He called for greater accountability, renewed commitment and collective action among health stakeholders to address gaps and improve healthcare delivery across the state.
The commissioner commended Governor Peter Mbah for what he described as sustained investments and reforms in the health sector, noting that the annual review provides an opportunity to assess the implementation of the 2026 Annual Operational Plan and measure progress.
According to him, the meeting would also enable stakeholders to identify bottlenecks and agree on practical measures to accelerate health sector performance.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, George Nwachi, described the review as an important mechanism for promoting accountability and evidence-based decision-making.
Nwachi urged participants to critically assess achievements, identify implementation gaps and develop realistic priorities for improved service delivery.
During the technical sessions, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Ann Oguejiofor, presented the resolutions from the 2025 Joint Annual Review to guide discussions on progress made and outstanding commitments.
The Sector-Wide Approach Desk Officer, Uju Ewoh, also presented updates on the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative Programme.
Similarly, the State Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Ikechukwu Obodo, presented a validated review template designed to ensure that the assessment is based on reliable data and measurable indicators.
The two-day review is expected to produce key outcomes that will guide the development of Enugu State’s 2027 Annual Operational Plan for the health sector.
The state government said the process is aimed at strengthening healthcare systems and delivering more efficient, responsive and people-centred health services to residents across Enugu State.
