A 16-year-old boy identified as Chukwuka from Enugu State has allegedly sustained severe facial injuries after an incident involving his maternal aunt in Aba, Abia State.
Chukwuka, who has reportedly lived with his aunt for about one year and eight months, was said to have been assisting her with household chores and her food business.
According to the teenager’s account, he was instructed to wash dirty plates in the house but inadvertently left one of the plates unwashed.
He alleged that when his aunt returned and discovered the unwashed plate, she became angry and allegedly used a broken plate to cut his face, leaving him with serious injuries.
The matter was subsequently reported at the Osisioma Police Division in Aba, where the teenager’s statement was documented.
At the time of reporting, the aunt was said to be with the police while Chukwuka was receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Aba.
However, the aunt reportedly gave a different account of the incident, stating that the injury was accidental. According to her, the plate fell from her hand, broke on the floor, and pieces of the broken plate injured Chukwuka.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and the police are expected to establish what led to the teenager’s injuries.
Chukwuka, who is only 16, is currently receiving medical attention as efforts are being made to ensure his proper treatment.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety and welfare of children living under the care of relatives, with calls for responsible adults to handle disciplinary situations without resorting to actions that could cause serious harm.
Whatever the circumstances surrounding the incident, the welfare and protection of the teenager remain paramount as authorities investigate the matter.
