The Anambra State Government has commenced efforts to address the recurring flooding and erosion challenges in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area, following the destruction caused by a recent heavy downpour.

The Commissioner for Works, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, accompanied by the Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, led an on-the-spot assessment of some of the affected areas.

The team inspected the Nkpor-Umoji axis, Umusiome and Ububa Uno, assessing the extent of damage to roads, drainage channels and adjoining properties.

Speaking during the inspection, Commissioner Ezeobi assured residents that the state government would take immediate palliative measures while working towards a permanent solution to the persistent flooding and erosion in the area.

He said the assessment would enable the government to determine the appropriate engineering interventions required to mitigate the problem and protect residents, properties and livelihoods.

The inspection was, however, suspended before all the affected areas could be assessed. Ezeobi assured residents that the team would return to complete the exercise and develop a comprehensive intervention plan.

The Commissioner also cautioned residents against developments that contravene approved structural and environmental plans, warning that indiscriminate construction and the obstruction of natural waterways could worsen flooding.

He stressed the need for residents to comply with relevant planning regulations to complement government efforts at tackling environmental challenges.

The intervention forms part of the Soludo administration’s efforts to respond directly to infrastructure and environmental challenges across communities, with emphasis on assessing problems on the ground and implementing practical solutions.
