The Anambra State Government has declared Saturday, August 22, 2026, as a compulsory environmental sanitation day across the state as part of activities marking the state’s 35th anniversary.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi, announced the directive in a statement issued in Awka on Tuesday.
According to the commissioner, movement will be restricted across the state from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. during the sanitation exercise.
He, however, stated that persons engaged in emergency and essential services would be exempted from the restriction.
Aguiyi also directed markets across the state to conduct comprehensive cleaning exercises on Thursday, August 20, and Friday, August 21, ahead of the anniversary sanitation.
He urged local government chairmen and Presidents-General of communities to ensure strict compliance with the directive and facilitate the prompt evacuation of waste generated during the exercise.
“All Local Government Chairmen and Presidents-General of Communities should ensure full compliance and waste evacuation. Let us all participate to keep our environment clean and healthy,” he said.
The commissioner appealed to residents to cooperate with the state government and participate actively in the exercise, stressing that the initiative was aimed at promoting a cleaner, healthier and more environmentally friendly Anambra.
