Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a 49-year-old man, Chima Ogumba, allegedly in connection with armed robbery and recovered a pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges from him.

The suspect was arrested on Monday by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, during an operation along Nkpor Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

According to Ikenga, the operatives stormed the identified location and conducted a search on the suspect, leading to the recovery of the firearm and ammunition.

He said the suspect was unable to provide what the police considered a satisfactory explanation for his possession of the weapon and ammunition.

Following the arrest, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, directed that the suspect be subjected to a thorough investigation.

The investigation, according to the police, is expected to establish the suspect’s possible involvement in armed robbery and other criminal activities, as well as determine the source and intended use of the recovered firearm and ammunition.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, proactive patrols and sustained tactical operations aimed at identifying and dismantling criminal networks across the state.

The police also assured residents that security operations would be sustained to protect lives and property and improve safety across communities in Anambra.
