The state of Ondo is in mourning following the sad demise of its Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, after a prolonged battle with leukemia.
According to a family source who spoke with SaharaReporters, Governor Akeredolu passed away in Lagos.
“Governor Akeredolu is dead; he passed away in Lagos,” the source confirmed.
Reports reveal that Governor Akeredolu had been receiving medical attention from state house doctors up until his passing. Efforts to move him abroad for treatment were reportedly hindered, compelling him to be managed locally.
At the age of 67, Governor Akeredolu’s health had been a cause for concern. He returned to Nigeria in September after spending three months receiving medical care in Germany.
Recently, he embarked on another medical leave following directives from President Bola Tinubu, handing over governance responsibilities to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Since his return to Nigeria, Governor Akeredolu had been trying to govern his state from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, a situation that elicited public outcry.
This tragic development affected plans for the celebration of the Governor’s wife, Betty Akeredolu’s 70th birthday.
She took to Twitter to announce the suspension of all birthday activities due to unforeseen circumstances, emphasizing that the celebrations would be held at a later date.
Governor Akeredolu’s battle with leukemia was first reported by in January, marking the beginning of a challenging health journey for the late Governor.
