The Member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, has called for stronger safety measures around abandoned mining sites following the death of a resident who reportedly drowned at an old coal mining site in Aja-Agu Community, Coal Camp, Enugu.
The victim, identified as Ifeanyichukwu Asonye, reportedly drowned at the abandoned mining site on Sunday evening, raising fresh concerns over the safety of residents, particularly young people, around old and abandoned mining locations in the community.
Following the incident, Hon. Atu visited Aja-Agu Community, where he inspected the scene and interacted with residents and community leaders.
The lawmaker also sympathised with the bereaved family and urged residents to exercise caution around abandoned mining sites, warning against activities that could expose them to avoidable dangers.
Atu commended the Enugu State Government and the Chairman of Enugu North Local Government Area, Dr. Ibekaku, for their prompt intervention, which facilitated the recovery of the deceased.
He said the incident highlighted the urgent need for stronger safety measures and increased regulatory attention around abandoned mining sites and communities affected by mining activities.
The lawmaker also recalled his sponsorship of a bill in the House of Representatives seeking to repeal the Nigeria Coal Corporation Act as part of efforts to modernise the legal framework governing coal and mining activities and strengthen regulation of the sector.
According to Atu, the proposed legislative reform is intended, among other objectives, to promote improved safety standards for communities located around mining areas and establish a more contemporary framework for responsible mining development.
He noted that properly regulated coal mining could contribute significantly to job creation and economic development in Enugu State, but stressed that economic benefits must not come at the expense of human safety, environmental protection and the wellbeing of host communities.
Atu said the latest incident further demonstrated the need to address the dangers posed by abandoned mining sites and ensure adequate protection for communities living around them.
Meanwhile, the President of the Coal Camp Youth Welfare Association, Comrade Chiedozie Emmanuel Umeadi, commended Atu for his prompt response to the incident and his continued support for the community.
Also speaking, the Councillor representing Ogbete West Ward 6, Hon. Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Udom, praised the lawmaker for what he described as his consistent commitment to the people of Coal Camp.
Udom said Atu’s visit demonstrated his willingness to identify with residents and support the community during difficult moments, adding that his continued presence and interventions had strengthened his relationship with the people.
